Powerwall 3: the default high-power value

Expansion units add 13.5 kWh at a lower incremental cost because they share the Powerwall 3 inverter. That adds runtime, not inverter output. If the first cabinet cannot start the proposed load, adding only energy does not solve the power problem.

Choose Powerwall 3 when: a high-power single unit covers the load plan, the installer and service path are credible, and the quote clearly identifies Backup Gateway or utility-approved Backup Switch scope.

Watch: a proposal that assumes virtual-power-plant revenue or incentives without current program terms, or a system that depends on internet connectivity without explaining offline backup behavior and warranty requirements.

Enphase: the modular and serviceable choice

The IQ Battery 5P stores 5 kWh and provides 3.84 kW continuous output per unit. That smaller module is useful when the homeowner wants to start small, add in 5 kWh increments or stay inside an existing Enphase solar ecosystem. AC coupling also makes retrofit design straightforward in many homes.

The trap is comparing one $5,500-to-$6,500 installed 5P with a 13.5 or 15 kWh cabinet. Whole-home backup needs enough battery units for both energy and power, plus the IQ System Controller. A one-unit backup-capable design can land closer to $7,500 to $9,500; two and four-unit stacks move the total quickly.

Enphase's distributed microinverter architecture can be field-serviceable at a module level, and the 5P carries a published 15-year or 6,000-cycle warranty. Confirm generation: older IQ Battery 10 equipment can have different power and warranty terms, while the newer IQ Battery 10C is another current comparison.

Choose Enphase when: you already own Enphase solar, value staged expansion or serviceable modules, and the stack meets both outage runtime and motor-start needs at a fair complete-system price.

FranklinWH: the large-cabinet whole-home choice

FranklinWH aPower 2 stores 15 kWh and publishes 10 kW continuous output. The required aGate handles backup, load management and system coordination. That makes FranklinWH compelling for buyers who want a whole-home design built around one larger cabinet and explicit load control.

The planning range is about $15,000 to $20,000 for one aPower 2 with aGate before incentives. Because aGate is required, the first battery carries more control-system cost; additional cabinets can improve the expansion economics.

FranklinWH publishes a 15-year or 60 MWh warranty for aPower 2. Registration is not paperwork to leave vague: the effective November 2025 end-user warranty states that an unregistered system receives only four years. The local certified installer therefore matters twice - for installation and for preserving the warranty path.

Choose FranklinWH when: the 15 kWh cabinet and aGate load-control design fit the outage plan and a proven local certified installer will support it.

Watch: quotes for legacy first-generation aPower at current-product pricing, and proposals that bundle aGate, panel work and load controls so the system cannot be compared line by line.
